Recent comments made by Sunil Gavaskar following the RCB vs Kings XI Punjab match have left Twitter divided. RCB lost the match against KXIP amid a number of misses and Virat Kohli happened to drop an easy catch which was not something that the cricket enthusiasts had anticipated. Within minutes, Twitter was flooded with netizens judging him for his poor performance, while many dragged Anushka’s name into it.
Sunil Gavasker too had something to say and during his commentary he said, “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai’, perhaps hinting at the viral video where Anushka was seen bowling to Virat during a practice session at their Mumbai residence.
Of course Anushka Sharma was not happy with the comments and took to her Instagram to question why he had made such comments. “That Mr Gavaskar your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amounts of respect for me and us?” she questioned in her post.
She went on to say, “It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stopped getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?” she questioned. Concluding her statement, Anushka Sharma said that “Respected Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentlemen’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this.”

And now, in response to her post Sunil Gavaskar has addressed her question while speaking in an interview with an Indian daily. “Aakash (Chopra) and I were talking about very little practice for everybody which has shown in rustiness for Rohit, MS Dhoni, Virat everyone in the first match,” Gavaskar said. “Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist? I am only stating what was seen in the video. If somebody has interpreted it (differently), what can I do?” he questioned.
Following his statement, the hashtag #WesupportGavaskar began to trend on the microblogging site, Twitter. “Sunil Gavaskar have nothing said wrong or sexist comment upon anushka sharma but shameless (sic),” said one user while another said, “Meet the first lady of cricket Mrs Cricket @AnushkaSharma. She can go between cricketers to take a pic but she can not be mentioned in cricket convos. He said nothing wrong. Your mentality during the whole lockdown changed and sticked to 1 just that thing.”

A number of netizens have questioned why Anushka Sharma happens to be at every match and in every picture the team takes. One netizen questioned, “What role @AnushkaSharma have for Indian cricket @BCCI? Is She the team manager, Coach Or a Player? Why she accompanied everywhere? Why no other players bring there wife with them just like @imVkohli Is it because she is some Actress or Team Captain Wife?
