In a rare address to the nation, United States First Lady Melania Trump touched on a number of topics as the world listened. During her keynote address of the second night of the Republican convention, Melania Trump expressed sympathy with all the American who have lost family members and loved ones to the novel Coronavirus. She did so while acknowledging the public health crisis the country was facing and that the president failed to contain.
She made her speech from the White House Rose Garden on Tuesday, and made her condolences to the loved ones of the more than 178,000 Americans who have now died from the virus and the millions more who have been infected. She asserted that her husband was the country’s best hope to move past the pandemic. Her speech comes at a time when President Donald Trump is under fire for his poor response to the pandemic.
“I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed dramatically,” she said to an audience who practiced no social distancing and most attendees; including her husband, were sans masks. “I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless,” she continued. “I want you to know, you are not alone. My husband’s administration will not stop fighting until there is an effective treatment for a vaccine available to everyone. Donald will not rest until he has done all he can to take care of everyone impacted in this pandemic,” she added.
Her remarks coe at a time when the United States is at the brink of trauma and despair and its people are still trying to come to terms with the pandemic, the looming health crisis, racial inequality and a crashing economy. Her address to the nation was a rare appearance for Melania Trump and she is only the second foreign-born first lady in US history. She went on to recall how she grew up in Slovenia and often dreamt of becoming a US citizen.
She went on further to reflect on the nationwide protests over the racial injustice and policing which has once again been triggered following the shooting of Jacob Blake who was struck multiple times by police and has been left paralyzed.
“Like all of you, I have reflected on the racial unrest in our country,” she said, after recalling an official visit to a slave port in Ghana as first lady. “It’s a harsh reality that we are not proud of parts of our history. I encourage people to focus on our future while still learning from our past,” she urged.
Following her unexpected speech,Twitter was divided on their views about her speech. Many lauded her for her efforts and for being the voice the country needs, while others criticised her for being a hypocrite and a racist. “Melania nailed it tonight,” one user wrote, while another tweeted, “I heard you wrote the entire speech yourself. You were the highlight of the night You spoke with a genuine heart as you sought to unite this country and give us hope for the future.”
