Karachi has witnessed multiple spells of rainfall in the monsoon season. While the city’s infrastructure is certainly not equipped to handle long-lasting thunderstorms, relief work continues in Karachi as well as various districts of the Sindh province. From overflowing sewers to electricity failures, heavy rains have wreaked havoc and caused great damage to lives, homes and roads among other things. In rather surprising news, the city of Karachi has received record-breaking showers this month, the first of its kind in the past 90 years. This was confirmed by members of the Pakistan Meteorological Department as well as the Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Law & Environment, Senator Murtaza Wahab.

Apart from Karachi, other districts of #Sindh have also been severely affected. CM Sindh after visiting different areas of Karachi yesterday is attending to relief work in other districts. He has visited Malir, Thatta & Sujawal since morning and is on his way to other districts

Taking to Twitter, Wahab noted, “This year Karachi has received unprecedented rainfall. Total rainfall in August so far has been recorded at 345 MM (PAF Faisal Base) which is highest since the year 1931. Entire #SindhGovt has been on the roads supervising relief work. Thankful to all those who have helped.” Tuesday’s spell marked 345 millimeters of rain at the PAF Faisal Base, while previously 298.4mm of rain was recorded there in 1984, adding that the Masroor Base received 271mm and Karachi Airport 241mm rain this year, which is 300 to 400 times more than average rainfall in Karachi in August.

“The areas adjoining the PAF Faisal and Gulshan-e-Hadeed received the heaviest showers under the strong monsoon system hanging over the vast areas of Sindh and Balochistan. This system would persist till Thursday and continue to generate moderate to heavy rains in Karachi and other cities of Sindh till Thursday,” said Sardar Sarfraz, Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) of Pakistan Meteorological Department, on Tuesday night. The torrential rains have also led to the tragic deaths of a handful of people due to rain-related incidents including drowning in waist-deep water, electrocution or being washed away with their cars. Some people have however been rescued by the volunteers of welfare organizations.
