Dubai Municipality has given cyclists free access to Mushrif Park from 6am to 9pm daily. Under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the municipality has also provided dedicated lanes for cycling enthusiasts in major public parks across the emirate.
Cyclists need to wear helmets and stick to the special cycling tracks, avoiding pedestrian paths, Dubai Municipality said. They have also been encouraged to use front and back lights, especially in the evenings, and observe all precautionary measures.
This initiative is part of the move to transform Dubai into a bicycle-friendly city. Recently, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, Mattar Al Tayer and Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief, Lt. General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri inspected cycling tracks and pedestrian crossings across Dubai. During the inspection, Al Marri praised RTA’s efforts in upgrading the infrastructure of the cycling tracks.
The RTA has set up approximately 425 kilometres of tracks in several areas including Bab Al Shams, Al Qudra Road, Saih Al Salam, Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai Water Canal, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, Al Khawaneej and Al Warqa, along with joint tracks in Al Mankhool, Al Karama and Al Qusais. By 2025, the authority plans to lay out cycling tracks to cover around 647 kilometres.

At a recent ‘Cycling is a Lifestyle’ Innovation Lab, representatives of RTA, Dubai Police and other relevant authorities pledged to work towards increasing the use of bicycles with the creation of dedicated areas, development of safety standards and policies, and promotion of a bicycle renting culture. Going forward, events and activities will be organised in the emirate to encourage the public to use bicycles as a mode of transport. This will help bring down the number of traffic accident fatalities and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
