When “Bisaat” began, the audience already knew there would be some sort of twist at play in the story due to the name itself (Bisaat roughly translates to chessboard). However, it isn’t until episode 10 that the real “jist” of the story is sprung upon us – and calling it “crazy” would be an understatement. Starring Azfar Rehman, Mirza Zain Baig, Anmol Baloch, Ayesha Omar, Saba Hameed, Sharmeen Ali and others, the story has been written by Ateeq Inayat and directed by Fahim Burney. While the story has, so far, revolved around Murtaza (Mirza Zain Baig) and Afreen’s (Anmol Baloch) torn-apart-in-“majboori” love, the story is fipped on its head in episode 10.
In episode 10, Murtaza is now married to his troublemaking cousin while she and her family plot against Afreen. Meanwhile, Afreen is realizing that Jahanzeb (Azfar Rehman) is not how he has always presented himself and is, in fact, a very brash sort of Jekyll and Hyde personality. While family plotting and scheming is happening against Afreen, it’s nice to see characters like Afshan (Sharmeen Ali) on the show as well. While up until now, we’ve always thought Afshan was behaving very aggressively against Jahanzeb for something that was, in fact, an accident…..it’s now becoming clear that Afshan has been the one person who has correctly pegged Jahanzeb for who he is all along.
While Murtaza has been after Jahanzeb to come clean and tell the truth about his impotency, the very reason why he “divorced” Sophie (Ayesha Omar) – surprise, they are not divorced -, Jahanzeb hatches an absolutely insane plan in a scene that leaves the audience staring in disbelief. Jahanzeb suggests to Murtaza that in order to spare Noor Ami (Saba Hameed) any grief, he will divorce Afreen secretly. Murtaza will then marry Afreen, have “relations” with her, get her pregnant and then divorce her, so Jahanzeb can step in and remarry her – all without anyone knowing, so Noor Ami can get her “heir.” This is the most ludicrous plot and honestly, what sort of person would say yes to this? Why can’t Noor Ami just hear the truth about her son being impotent? Is it really necessary to go to such extreme lengths to give her a baby when Murtaza can just have one of his own and Noor Ami can keep busy playing with Murtaza’s child……presented as Murtaza’s child? While it’s understandable that she wants her “own” grandchildren, if it’s just not possible then it’s just not.
What exactly does Jahanzeb think he will be achieving here? If he’s willing to go to such lengths to get a child to present as his own, is it possible that he’s plotting something even greater than what he’s saying? Will he take Afreen and Murtaza’s (hypothetical) child and give it to Sophie? This show has taken such a strange turn that it’s no longer clear exactly where it’s headed. But one thing is for certain – no one is so “majboor” and “ehsaanmand” to agree to something like this. Why don’t our shows depict honesty and communication? There wasn’t any reason for Afreen to marry Jahanzeb either, but now this is reaching excessive heights of unbelievability. “Bisaat” may be a guilty pleasure of sorts, but quality viewing this is not.
