“Aik Chubhan Si” has arrived without much buzz or fanfare, taking audiences by surprise. Sami Khan and Sonya Hussyn share such wonderful chemistry, each and every time they star in a show together, it’s one worth watching – even if only for their pair. The promos do not reveal much about the show, barring it being a love quadruple of sorts – or is it? Starring Sami Khan, Sonya Hussyn, Hira Khan, Fahad Sheikh and Asma Abbas in prominent roles, the story has been written by Rukhsana Nigar and directed by Mohsin Talat.
The first episode takes off on an intriguing note – and unexpectedly so! Haroon (Sami Khan) and Naila (Sonya Hussyn) are immediately lovable as a married couple with two young children. It’s almost surprising to see the couple with a baby, as that doesn’t happen very often on-screen. This adorable family is the perfect family with good values, loving attitudes and generous minds. However, it’s immediately evident that Haroon does not like visiting Naila’s house and while this is a typical attitude we see on-screen in our dramas from toxic husbands, it quickly becomes apparent why.
Maheen (Hira Khan) is a young girl raised by her father, but has never had to lift a finger in her life. She is spoiled rotten and uses the sympathy of others to get her way. Despite her father, Ahsan (Javed Sheikh), relying on her, she does not care for him the way she should and even mistreats her fiancé, played by Fahad Sheikh. To put it simply, Maheen is trouble from the word go. Even at this point, the audience does not understand where the story is headed necessarily, wondering how Haroon could ever fall for this ill-mannered young woman down the line. And then, suddenly, the story becomes apparent.
When Naila and Haroon come to visit Ahsan, Maheen spots their car as they leave and stares….hard…..in a very unsettling way. Credit to Hira Khan for the way she enacts this scene, as it sent chills down the spine. Moments later, as the family is on their way home, they meet with an accident – and the episode ends. The concept of nazar is not one Pakistani dramas necessarily center a storyline around, but this time around, that’s exactly where “Aik Chubhan Si” is headed – and it will be fascinating to see how it plays out on our screens. Sami Khan and Sonya Hussyn are perfectly cast for this show, a truly root-worthy couple who we want to root for and protect. Hira Khan has played the role of spoiled girl before, but this time around, there’s a sinister tinge to her character and she makes an impact. With Javed Sheikh’s Ahsan appearing to be on the out, will Maheen wind up moving in with Naila and Haroon? What will that mean for their family? “Aik Chubhan Si” did not arrive with expectations, but the first episode has us interested!
