Covid-19 impact: Paris adapts to the “new normal” with first of its kind floating movie theatre

When the year 2020 kicked off with a bang, everyone had high hopes, multiple plans and great expectations from the new decade. However, the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 put the world on standstill. As the contagious virus witnessed a rampant spread across the globe, people were forced to compromise in the way they led their lives before the pandemic. Everyone began to adapt to the “new normal” with socially-distant weddings taking place in different parts of the world, shopping malls re-opening to limited customers in a store at one time and grocery stores practicing the six-feet-apart WHO recommendation. But a lot changed in terms of entertainment too.

Cinema halls were amongst the first to shut down in most countries. Movie theatres have long been a great source of entertainment on weekends. Just when we thought how we would watch our favourite blockbusters on the big screen this year, Paris seems to have found a “new normal” workable solution. In a first, the city will play host to a floating movie theatre where everyone sits in boats, hence practicing social distancing, while also enjoying a complete cinema-like experience.

Le cinema sur l’eau (“cinema on the water”) will screen the 2018 film Le Grand Bain (Sink or Swim) from a boat on the Bassin de la Villette onto a 16x9m screen. One hundred and fifty lucky winners will get to watch the movie from one of 38 electric boats that will be provided for the screening. Each of the boats fits four to six people. They will all follow safety guidelines for social distancing. No one will be sitting with strangers and each boat will be assigned to a set number of family and friends. Another 150 deckchairs will also be set up in the Paris Plages area to view the film from the Quai de Seine. What are your thoughts on this latest development?
